K9 Karma to get a four-legged buddy cop

Maricopa’s Paw Patrol will soon expand, thanks to recent fundraising efforts. The Maricopa Police Foundation announced that funds raised from the second annual Swinging for Safety golf tournament will support the acquisition of a second canine officer for the police department.

The foundation plays a crucial role in financing non-budgeted expenses for the Maricopa Police Department, supporting initiatives like the annual Shop with a Cop program. Chairman Chris Cahall noted, “A dog can run anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000,” highlighting that the cost varies based on factors like training, age, and equipment.

While the foundation continues to finalize the financial totals from the tournament, Cahall expressed confidence that the funds will sufficiently assist the department this year. MPD Chief Mark Goodman revealed that the department is eager to welcome a new K-9 as early as next month with the foundation’s backing.

“Having a second canine will help us as we continuously strive to remain one of Arizona’s safest cities,” Goodman stated. He emphasized that the new canine officer will enhance community engagement efforts, fostering stronger connections between the police and residents.
