Jimmy McCain, Son of Late Arizona Senator, Switches to Democrat and Endorses Harris

PHOENIX — In a notable political shift, Jimmy McCain, son of the late Arizona senator John McCain, has registered as a Democrat. He has pledged his support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming elections, which could significantly influence voter turnout in this crucial battleground state.
At the same time, Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, hosted an event in Phoenix with Turning Point USA, a key organization reshaping the Arizona GOP in line with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign. The contrasting activities of Jimmy McCain and Vance highlight the varied factions within the GOP that both parties are aiming to sway.
Democrats have made considerable gains in Arizona over recent years. Historically a Republican stronghold, the state’s voter base has shifted toward an anti-Trump coalition that features both disillusioned Republicans and conservative independents. In response, Harris is adopting moderate stances, particularly on significant issues like border policy, which resonate in a border state.
Trump’s strategy targets young voters who feel alienated from traditional politics. He recently held a rally in Phoenix alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who withdrew from his independent campaign to endorse Trump. The Vance event was part of a broader initiative to mobilize young supporters, featuring music performances to energize the crowd.
During the Turning Point gathering, Vance and event founder Charlie Kirk discussed critical social issues, including immigration and transgender rights. Vance articulated, “We just want Americans to be able to live a decent life in the country their parents and grandparents built.” In contrast, Jimmy McCain, who left the Republican Party after Trump secured the nomination in 2016, publicly declared his new affiliation following a nine-month deployment abroad.
His change of heart was further fueled by Trump’s controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery, an event Harris condemned as disrespectful. “The ultimate sacrifice was made by those buried at Arlington; they don’t get a political opinion,” stated McCain, emphasizing the gravity of the location.
Trump defended his Arlington visit by citing invitations from families of Marines who perished during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. His campaign has asserted that he remains a staunch advocate for military personnel.
Jimmy McCain, aged 36, has an extensive military background, having served in the Marines and currently holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Army National Guard. He describes himself as a moderate, reflecting on his father’s legacy of placing the country first.
Cindy McCain, the late senator’s widow, previously endorsed President Joe Biden in a strategic move that contributed to Biden’s narrow victory in Arizona. Following the election, she was appointed as the U.S. ambassador to international food and agriculture agencies.
John McCain’s legacy looms large in Arizona; he served in Congress for over three decades and was known for his independent spirit. However, his son’s endorsement of Harris is unlikely to shift opinions among Republican loyalists who remain critical of the McCain legacy.
One attendee at the Turning Point rally expressed disdain for John McCain, stating, “I really didn’t respect him… I think it’s disgusting.” This sentiment underscores the ongoing division within the Republican Party as it grapples with its identity amidst changing political landscapes.
