Jeff Flake Backs Kamala Harris: What Does This Unexpected Endorsement Mean?

By Matthew Holloway |
In a bold political move, former Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris over President Donald Trump via a post on X on Sunday. While this decision sent shockwaves through some circles, many Arizona Republicans were not taken by surprise. Flake, who has been openly critical of Trump for several years, previously penned a damning op-ed in The New York Times in 2021, reflecting his longstanding disdain for the former president.
In light of Flake’s endorsement, AZ Free News sought clarification from his team regarding potential policy concessions related to the endorsement. Questions centered on whether Flake sought assurances on issues such as the filibuster, religious liberty, or the Supreme Court. Additionally, concerns were raised over whether he might have been promised a future ambassadorship or cabinet post in exchange for his support.
Despite these inquiries, Flake’s team has not responded, leaving speculation lingering in the air.
In his statements shared on X, Flake stated, “I’ll be supporting Kamala Harris for President and Tim Walz for Vice President.” He acknowledged his previous service with both politicians, emphasizing their character and commitment to the nation. “I would encourage all Republicans who feel this way to do the same,” he urged.
Flake emphasized the importance of unity over division in a written statement, declaring, “I believe that we don’t have to agree on every issue or policy.” He advocated for a candidate who promotes hope rather than grievance, highlighting the need for strong leadership in the face of global challenges. “Having spent the past three years overseas as a United States ambassador, I’ve seen up close that we have very real enemies abroad,” he added, underscoring the need for allies and informed international policy.
In apparent contrast, some Arizona Republicans voiced discontent. Merissa Hamilton, co-founder of EZAZ.org, reacted strongly on social media, claiming Flake’s stance aligns him with “Fascist Communism.” Conservative commentator Rogan O’Handley echoed similar sentiments, labeling Flake a “backstabbing RINO.”
During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Flake reiterated his opposition to Trump, linking it to the former president’s attempts to contest the 2020 election results. He expressed the belief that true conservatives must adhere to the rule of law, stating, “It’s difficult to support a candidate who… tries to use the powers of the presidency to overturn that election.”
Additionally, Flake criticized Trump’s stance on foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. He argued for a collaborative approach with allies, suggesting that Harris understands the complexities of the situation better than Trump.
Since ending his Senate term, Flake has served as U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye, a position many view as a strategic political reward from the Biden administration. This context raises questions among Arizona Republicans about what Flake stands to gain from his latest endorsement.
