Lobbyist Jay Kaprosy reflects on a career that spans over 25 years, a journey that began as an intern and has evolved into a nuanced understanding of policy advocacy. Few grasp the intricacies of his role, prompting Kaprosy to simplify his explanation when introducing himself to others.

Kaprosy launched his career in 1998, serving as an assistant liaison with the Arizona Department of Education. His early responsibilities included representing key educational stakeholders, providing a solid foundation in legislative processes that would shape his future pursuits.

After four legislative sessions working for former Superintendent Lisa Graham Keegan, Kaprosy transitioned to the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. This role broadened his focus, introducing him to diverse issues such as environmental policy and transportation while continuing his commitment to education. His achievements included coordinating political activities and enhancing the chamber’s political action committee.

In 2005, he joined forces with colleagues Wendy Briggs and Jeff Sandquist at Steptoe & Johnson, a prominent law firm. This strategic move laid the groundwork for launching their own firm, Veridus, in 2008, aiming for a wider array of services for clients.

Currently, Kaprosy specializes in education and financial legislation, working with organizations such as the Arizona Charter Schools Association. His client base has expanded to include non-profits focused on health care and substance use treatment, reflecting his commitment to meaningful community impact.

This legislative session, Kaprosy is particularly concerned about an increase in proposed regulations that could impose additional costs on schools and businesses. He notes a significant shift from a free-market approach to one plagued by rising government mandates.

What captivates Kaprosy most is the challenge of navigating complex policy issues. His passion for problem-solving drives his engagement in the legislative process, allowing him to contribute positively to his community.

However, the intertwining of politics and policy has made his work more challenging. Kaprosy laments that political dynamics often overshadow substantive policy discussions, complicating the legislative landscape.

Addressing the misconceptions about lobbying, Kaprosy shares a personal anecdote. By playfully describing himself as an “evil lobbyist for the forces of good,” he attempts to dispel the mystery surrounding his profession, ultimately emphasizing the role of lobbyists in educating legislators on complex issues.
