Jared Goff throws 2 TD passes and Lions' defense slows Kyler Murray in 20-13 win over Cardinals

Detroit’s formidable defense thwarted the Arizona Cardinals in the second half, enabling the Lions to secure a 20-13 victory on Sunday. The win underscored Detroit’s continued dominance over Arizona, marking an impressive 5-0-1 record against the Cardinals since 2017.

Quarterback Jared Goff exhibited precision early in the game, throwing two touchdowns in the first half and completing his first 14 passes before facing an incompletion. He concluded the game with 18 completions out of 23 attempts for 196 yards. David Montgomery contributed a robust performance, tallying 106 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Head Coach Dan Campbell noted the team’s versatility, stating, “I feel like we can play different types of games. We’ve just got to find a way to win every week.” His squad demonstrated adaptability, particularly as the second half saw the Lions’ defense step up, allowing just one field goal and keeping Arizona out of the end zone.

The game featured a notable moment before halftime, as the Lions executed a well-timed hook-and-ladder play, with Goff connecting with Amon-Ra St. Brown, who lateraled to Jahmyr Gibbs for a 20-yard touchdown. Goff expressed satisfaction with the timing of the call: “We’ve been working on that one for a while.”

Arizona’s kicker, Matt Prater, narrowed the score to 20-10 with a field goal as the first half concluded. Nonetheless, despite missed opportunities, including a crucial interception thrown by Kyler Murray early in the third quarter, the Cardinals battled throughout the game with resilience.

Murray finished with 21 completions on 34 attempts, amassing 205 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. While addressing his team’s missed opportunities, Murray remarked, “They made more plays than us. That’s how it goes. But I’m excited about the road ahead.”

Detroit’s defense made critical stops, particularly when they halted a potential scoring drive after Murray’s interception. Aidan Hutchinson further solidified his growing presence with another sack, raising his season total to 6.5 in just three games.

The Lions will host the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, September 30, while the Cardinals prepare to face the Washington Commanders next Sunday. Both teams aim to build momentum as the season progresses.

Injury updates revealed notable absences and impacts on both sides. The Lions were without safety Ifeatu Melifonwu and cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. due to injuries, while the Cardinals saw limited play from right tackle Kelvin Beachum and tight end Trey McBride, who was evaluated for a concussion.

As the NFL season advances, both teams look to refine their strategies and capitalize on opportunities in the weeks to come.
