Glendale Union High School District Announces Retirement of Superintendent
Superintendent Brian Capistran has declared his intention to retire in June 2025, concluding a notable three-decade career with the Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD). Under his guidance, GUHSD, the second-largest high school district in Arizona, has served over 16,000 students, earning accolades as one of the state’s top-performing districts.
Capistran’s journey began as a Spanish teacher and coach at Sunnyslope High School. Over the years, he advanced through various roles, including assistant principal at different schools, and later became principal at Apollo High School. His administrative path included positions as the school safety administrator, assistant superintendent, and associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction before his appointment as superintendent in 2015.
During his tenure, all GUHSD high schools received “A” ratings from the Arizona Department of Education, a testament to the district’s dedication to academic excellence. Capistran’s advocacy extended beyond the district, with involvement in local and national educational organizations, such as the Glendale Chamber of Commerce and the Arizona Business and Education Coalition.
In recognition of his impact on education, he received the ASA All Arizona Superintendent award for large school districts. His legacy reflects a commitment to collaboration, high standards, and the well-being of the GUHSD community.
The GUHSD Governing Board will soon outline the process for selecting a new superintendent, who is expected to assume their role on July 1, 2025.
Sunnyslope High School seniors Asia Martin, Mayline Sanchez Torres, and Angel Santana Torres have also made headlines by earning full ride scholarships through the QuestBridge Scholarship program. Martin will attend Wellesley College, Sanchez Torres will go to Brown University, and Santana Torres is set to join the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, all enriching New England’s academic landscape.
