James Arthur Ray, Convicted for Deadly Sweat Lodge Incident, Passes Away at Age 62

James Arthur Ray, the self-help Guru known for his controversial “Spiritual Warrior” retreat, has passed away at the age of 67. His brother John announced the news via social media, expressing deep shock over Ray’s sudden departure.
Ray became a controversial figure in 2009 when three participants, Kirby Brown, James Shore, and Liz Newman, died during a sweat lodge ceremony at his retreat in Sedona. The incident resulted from excessive heat and hazardous conditions, leading to Ray’s conviction for negligent homicide in 2010. He served two years in prison, released in 2013, but he was ultimately found not guilty of manslaughter.
In his statement, John Ray reflected on James’ life and relationships, noting how he always aspired to enhance the lives of others. He described his brother as an intelligent and disciplined individual who left a lasting impact on those he mentored.
In subsequent years, Ray sought to have his civil rights restored, a request granted by a Yavapai County judge in 2017, although his homicide conviction remained on record.
The charity SEEK Safely, established by the family of Kirby Brown, also addressed Ray’s passing, acknowledging the complex feelings surrounding it. They emphasized their ongoing concern about the broader self-help industry and urged seekers to remain vigilant in their journeys for self-improvement.
Despite Ray’s controversial past, which left a significant mark on the self-help arena, he is remembered by family as a passionate individual who influenced many lives, underscoring the complexities of his legacy.
