A political clash in Maricopa’s Legislative District 16 is heating up as election day approaches, with rival candidates exchanging sharp barbs through advertisements. Last month, the GOP caucus, backed by State Rep. Teresa Martinez, state Sen. T.J. Shope, and House candidate Chris Lopez, released a contentious TV ad labeling Democratic candidates Keith and Stacey Seaman as a “political odd couple,” a phrase criticized as inappropriate given their father-daughter relationship.
The ad accused Seaman of voting against tougher penalties for fentanyl sales, linking it to House Bill 2060. However, the claim was erroneous, as the representative’s vote was associated with a different bill entirely. This factual misstep is just one example of the inaccuracies that often emerge in the heat of campaign season.
In retaliation, the Democratic Party aimed its sights on Lopez with a brief advertisement highlighting allegations of business failures. The spot claimed Lopez had mishandled three businesses and faced multiple tax liens while suggesting he indulged in extravagant hunting trips abroad.
Lopez responded vigorously to the assertions, labeling them as fabrications. “They’re losing the race and they’re going to throw whatever they can at me,” he stated. His defense centers on the nature of his businesses, which he insists are operational. While it is true that three of the businesses Lopez participated in are now inactive—an administrative status that does not equate to failure—he maintains that he has successfully managed others over decades.
The advertisement also highlighted tax liens against Lopez, which, according to documents obtained from the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, total around $58,970 across several jurisdictions. Lopez did not publicly comment on this during an interview but noted that most of the liens were resolved within two years, leaving only minor debts related to tax filings.
Considering these claims, while it is accurate that Lopez has faced tax liens, it is significant to note that most of these have been settled. The context surrounding these liens has raised concerns regarding the overall portrayal of Lopez’s financial health and capabilities.
Another point of contention arises from Lopez’s hunting trips to Africa, where he reportedly hunted several game animals, some of which are considered near-threatened species. Links to these excursions on social media have drawn fire from Democratic critics, who have branded them as frivolous displays of wealth rather than responsible leisure pursuits. However, Lopez defended his right to hunt and travel, insisting that it is a family tradition.
As the election looms, the exchange of accusations underscores the increasingly contentious atmosphere of the current political landscape in Arizona, with voters now left to sift through the claims and counterclaims to discern the truth behind the rhetoric.
