Iran says it attacked US forces at air bases in Qatar and Iraq

In response to escalating tensions, Iran initiated missile strikes on U.S. military bases in Qatar and Iraq on Monday, a reaction to recent American bombings of its nuclear facilities. This marks a significant increase in hostilities in the already volatile region.

Qatar promptly condemned the assault on Al Udeid Air Base, confirming that it intercepted the missiles without any reported casualties. The Qatari Foreign Ministry described the attack by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a blatant violation of its sovereignty and international law.

In a statement via state television, Iran framed the missile attacks as a proportional response, asserting that they matched the number of bombs dropped by the U.S. on its nuclear sites over the weekend. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran did not seek war but would respond to aggression.

Military targets in Iraq, particularly the Ain al-Assad base housing U.S. personnel, were also struck; however, details regarding damage or casualties from that strike remain unclear. The rapid sequence of retaliatory actions underscores the precarious state of affairs in the region.

As Iran continued its military actions, Israeli forces expanded their attacks. They targeted facilities in Tehran, including Evin prison, which holds political dissenters. This strategy aims to exert pressure on Iran’s government while signaling Israeli intentions not to seek regime change.

The conflict’s escalation coincides with U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, marking a significant involvement of the U.S. in the ongoing hostilities. The airstrikes have raised concerns about a broader regional conflict as reactions from Iranian officials intensified, dismissing negotiations and threatening retaliation against U.S. interests.

In Vienna, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, expressed concern over damage at the Fordo facility following U.S. strikes. Iran insisted it had taken measures to protect nuclear materials before the attack, underscoring an increasingly cautious approach amidst heightened tensions.

Both nations have suffered casualties since hostilities reignited. In Israel, recent casualties have escalated to at least 24 killed and over 1,000 injured, while Iranian strikes have reportedly resulted in approximately 950 deaths and more than 3,450 injuries, according to a Washington-based human rights group.

The situation has prompted global calls for diplomatic solutions amidst rising fears of a protracted conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the Israeli and American attacks, labeling them “unprovoked aggression” and advocating for a resolution to ease tensions.

As the conflict progresses, the potential for diplomatic engagement remains uncertain, with both sides signaling their unwillingness to back down. The developments highlight a critical juncture for regional stability and international relations.
