Investigators Examine GCU Dorm Blaze as ‘Suspicious Fire’

A fire erupted at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Agave Apartments, a six-story building on the Grand Canyon University campus located near 35th Avenue and Camelback Road. This residential facility accommodates around 577 students.
The Phoenix Fire Department (PFD) is treating the incident as a suspicious fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a smoke-filled hallway on the third floor, where the fire was localized in a common living area.
Early activation of the building’s sprinkler system played a crucial role in controlling the blaze before firefighters could extinguish it completely. PFD noted that this combination of automatic response and timely intervention prevented further damage and the spread of the fire.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the residents. However, the exact number of students who may be displaced due to the fire is still undetermined. PFD is collaborating with a community assistance program to support those affected.
As the investigation continues, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. PFD’s Fire Investigations Task Force is working alongside GCU police to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
