Injury Woes: D-backs’ Ketel Marte Exits Game with Hamstring Trouble

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte suffered a left hamstring strain during the team’s 6-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. The injury occurred in the first inning as Marte raced to second base after hitting a deep drive to center field.
Marte’s play quickly turned concerning when he stutter-stepped, ultimately reaching second base but visibly favoring his left leg. Right fielder Corbin Carroll noted the somber mood in the dugout as teammates watched Marte limp off the field with assistance from the team’s training staff, replaced by Garrett Hampson shortly thereafter.
The team plans to evaluate Marte’s condition Saturday. Manager Torey Lovullo stated, “We’re going to continue to evaluate him, most likely headed for the IL. The timing of it isn’t ideal, but we have players that are ready to step in until he gets back.”
This injury follows a remarkable week for Marte, who just signed a lucrative six-year, $116.5 million contract extension with the Diamondbacks. The deal includes a player option and $46 million in deferred payments through 2040.
Despite the injury setback, Marte has started the season strong, boasting a .346 batting average and reaching base in all eight games played thus far. Last season, he finished third in National League MVP voting, recording impressive numbers with 36 home runs and 95 RBIs.
Marte has a history of hamstring issues, having faced similar injuries in 2019, 2021, and 2022, adding urgency to the current situation.
As the Diamondbacks navigate this injury, fans and analysts will be watching closely to assess the impact on the team’s performance moving forward.
