Projection: Incumbents to win back city council seats

Maricopa City Council incumbents have significantly outpaced their challengers in the five-way race for three council seats, according to recent results from Pinal County.

InMaricopa has projected victories for Vice Mayor Amber Liermann, and Councilmembers Bob Marsh and Eric Goettl. Liermann secured over 26% of the votes, leading the pack of five candidates. Marsh and Goettl each garnered 23% of the vote.

Challengers Chrystal O’Jon and Le’On Willis lagged behind with 14% and 11%, respectively. Willis faced further controversy after being exposed in May for falsely claiming to be an Air Force veteran.

“I would love to thank everyone in the community for their support,” Liermann told InMaricopa. “Talking with voters, they spoke of local responsibility and the need to alleviate national stressors. It was really encouraging.”

Goettl acknowledged the ongoing ballot count but expressed gratitude for the strong community support. “Democracy only works when we have choices to choose from,” he remarked.

Marsh conveyed enthusiasm about continuing his term. “I’m very excited to have another four years to work with our awesome team on city council. We talked about ‘keeping the band together,’ and I’m glad we got our wish,” he said.

A poll conducted by InMaricopa on July 13 accurately forecasted Liermann’s top finish, followed by Marsh and Goettl. The poll also correctly suggested that the challengers would struggle, with Willis finishing last.
