I touched a tarantula so you don't have to: Support the Sentinel's local journalism

Reporting can encompass a wide range of experiences. At times, the job is exhilarating, such as being moments away from former President Barack Obama or riding in a Secret Service vehicle. Other instances can weigh heavily on the heart, like witnessing the struggles of homelessness or sharing in the grief of a mother showing photos of her deceased son.

Daily life as a reporter can take unusual turns, whether it’s visiting a morgue, navigating a mental health facility, or having lunch with police officers while they enjoy Chinese food. It can include observing bail processes, attending support group meetings, or simply being in a local bar conducting research.

Recently, I found myself at the fairgrounds interacting with a ball python, an unconventional way to connect with our readers while providing them with new stories.

The importance of local news is undeniable, especially considering the alarming statistic that over half of U.S. counties lack reliable news access. Tucson is no exception to the challenges facing local journalism. As esteemed writer Chuck Bowden once lamented, the landscape can change dramatically overnight, with beloved institutions disappearing, much like our local news outlets that are dwindling or being acquired by larger corporations.

As we approach 2025, several notable changes have shaken our media environment. The Tucson Citizen is a memory, Bowden has passed away, and local favorite Eegee’s has faced bankruptcy. Yet, amidst these challenges, we continue to thrive in Tucson, supported by our community.

This year, joining the dedicated team at the Tucson Sentinel has brought insight and opportunity. Great reporting requires determination, curiosity, and the backing of our readers. In an era awash with free information, quality journalism retains immense value, especially when it is grounded in local truth and integrity.

We extend our gratitude to everyone who has engaged with us—reading, sharing, and donating. If you haven’t yet contributed, please consider supporting the Tucson Sentinel’s mission to deliver essential news in the coming year.

Local independent journalism is vital for our community. Every contribution helps enhance our reporting initiatives. Your support can be tripled through generous matching donations if made by December 31.
