Fire in deadly I-40 crash burned for 12 hours, officials say

WILLIAMS, Ariz. — A tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred near Williams, leading to two fatalities on Thursday. An initial report indicates that 18 vehicles, which included 13 passenger cars, five commercial vehicles, and five “unattached trailers,” were involved in this devastating incident.

The crash was precipitated by a commercial tractor-trailer that jackknifed, effectively blocking the right side of the highway. As other drivers attempted to maneuver around the obstruction, a subsequent tractor-trailer failed to slow, causing a catastrophic chain reaction. This second vehicle pushed several cars into the first trailer and beneath other commercial trucks, intensifying the disaster.

Fire erupted once one of the commercial vehicles caught ablaze, spreading rapidly to adjacent vehicles. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) confirmed that the resulting fire burned for over 12 hours, unable to be contained promptly due to severe weather and traffic congestion, hampering emergency response efforts.

Both of the deceased were passengers in separate vehicles. Initially, officials from the Department of Public Safety reported three fatalities, which has since been updated. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed as authorities continue their investigation.

In light of this tragedy, DPS officials have issued reminders urging motorists to postpone travel during inclement weather. They stressed the importance of caution and preparedness for those who must be on the road.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
