I-10 lane restrictions and freeway closures this weekend, Aug. 23-26

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced several freeway improvement projects that will lead to closures and lane restrictions in the Phoenix area this weekend, from August 23 to 26.

Starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, westbound Interstate 10 will be narrowed to two or three lanes between US 60 and 24th Street, affecting traffic near Sky Harbor Airport. Expect this configuration until 4 a.m. on Monday, August 26, as part of the Broadway Curve Improvement Project. Eastbound I-10 will also experience lane reductions, with three lanes available between Broadway Road and US 60. Additionally, Broadway Road will be closed between 48th and 55th streets, along with related closures to I-10 ramps and 52nd Street at Broadway.

Motorists are urged to consider alternative routes, such as the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, to circumvent the restricted areas. Notably, the newly opened westbound I-10 collector-distributor road between Baseline Road and 40th Street provides an option for those heading to downtown Phoenix.

Meanwhile, southbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) will also be closed from 10 p.m. on Friday until 4 a.m. on Monday. This closure extends between Loop 202 and I-10 to facilitate a traffic shift. Drivers accessing Sky Harbor Airport can use the 44th Street exit from Loop 202 as a detour.

In another development, southbound I-17 will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday until noon on Saturday, affecting the stretch between the I-10 “Stack” interchange and the I-10 “Split.” Northbound I-17 will face closures between 9 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Detour options for the I-17 closures include utilizing I-10 within the downtown Phoenix area.
