Exceptional Community Hospital of Maricopa has awarded its inaugural DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses to Inpatient Nurse Spencer Hosobe during a ceremony held on March 28, 2025.

Hosobe received the honor after a patient nominated him, praising his compassionate and attentive care throughout their hospitalization. The DAISY Award is part of an international program that celebrates the dedication and skill of nurses, established in 1999 by the family of Patrick Barnes, who was inspired to honor nurses after experiencing exceptional care during his battle with an autoimmune disease.

At the ceremony, Hosobe’s heartfelt connection with his patients was highlighted. One patient described him as someone who “answered my bell whenever I rang it within seconds” and emphasized his warmth and genuine concern. “He really would be concerned and hurt if something happened to me on his watch,” the patient noted.

Spencer Hosobe’s recognition represents a significant moment for Exceptional Community Hospital, making it the first institution in the city to bestow this award. Carmela Hamlett, the inpatient manager, expressed her pride, stating, “This award is especially meaningful because it comes directly from the voice of our patients.” She further commended Hosobe for exemplifying nursing’s spirit through his compassionate and empathetic care.

This ceremony marks the beginning of an annual tradition at Exceptional Community Hospital, aimed at honoring nurses who significantly impact the lives of their patients and their families.
