Hobbs’ Budget Plan Sparks Widespread Doubt

By Daniel Stefanski |
Arizona Republicans have expressed their concerns following the release of Governor Katie Hobbs’ Executive Budget for Fiscal Year 2026. The proposal, unveiled on Friday, outlines Hobbs’ vision for enhancing economic growth while addressing the needs of residents.
In her statement, Hobbs emphasized the necessity of delivering “opportunity, security, and freedom” for all Arizonans. She asserted, “We are connecting Arizonans to good jobs, lowering the costs of housing, child care and groceries.” Hobbs also pledged to be a diligent steward of taxpayer dollars by cutting waste and investing in essential services across the state.
However, Republicans, having had limited time to review the budget, raised several objections. Arizona House Speaker Steve Montenegro highlighted concerns related to parental choice and fiscal responsibility. He stated, “It’s clear that there is a long way to go,” indicating a need for collaboration over the budget to ensure it aligns with Republican values.
A spokesperson for the Arizona Senate Republicans mirrored these sentiments, arguing that some of Hobbs’ proposed solutions could impose undue burdens on taxpayers. They maintained that their own budget proposal focuses on fiscal responsibility while ensuring essential government functions are funded.
This budget is Hobbs’ third proposal since taking office, marking her efforts to navigate a divided government. In previous years, Republican leaders, particularly Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen, have compelled Hobbs to concede on various issues. This trend is likely to continue, with Republicans poised to advocate for their priorities against what they term as Hobbs’ radical initiatives.
