SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — A hiker is on the mend following a surprising encounter with a fox near Sierra Vista. The incident occurred this past Saturday along the Brown Canyon Trail.

According to Arizona Game and Fish, the fox, suspected of being rabid, lunged at the hiker and bit his leg. Fortunately, the bite did not penetrate the skin. The hiker responded with quick reflexes, prompting the fox to flee.

Wildlife officials are warning the public that foxes, along with bats and skunks, are among the most frequent carriers of rabies. If anyone suspects rabies in local wildlife, they should call 623-236-7201, maintain a safe distance, and avoid any contact with the animal.
