Hiker Ambushed by Coatimundi in Cochise County

COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — A hiker in southern Arizona experienced a disturbing encounter with wildlife on Sunday. The incident occurred in Ash Canyon, south of Sierra Vista, as reported by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
The individual initially returned to his vehicle after a hike, only to find a coatimundi perched on the hood. In an attempt to shoo away the creature, he shouted and waved his arms, but the encounter escalated quickly.
The coatimundi became aggressive, tearing off a windshield wiper before launching an attack on the man. Although he was able to reach the safety of his vehicle, he sustained scratches and bites in the process. As a precaution, the man is now receiving rabies vaccinations at a local hospital.
Efforts to locate the coatimundi remain ongoing. Authorities dispatched a USDA wildlife specialist to the scene, but the animal was not found. The specialist is scheduled to return in the evening or early morning for another search attempt.
Once located, the coatimundi will undergo rabies testing, as confirmed by local officials. Arizona State Parks describes the coatimundi as a member of the raccoon family, similar in size to a small dog, weighing about 18 pounds. Their distinguishing long snouts and troop behavior are notable traits.
This incident serves as a reminder for outdoor enthusiasts in rural areas to remain vigilant and avoid confrontation with wildlife.
