Scottsdale woman credits her pup with saving her from injury as roof tile flies through her window

Do dogs know when their owners are in danger? Rebecca Barcy says hers certainly did.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Rebecca Barcy doesn’t go a day without her furry best friend, Jasper, by her side. She’s grateful he was with her on Tuesday night as severe weather swept through northeast Scottsdale, where her office building is located.

As she exited the room where her office is located, she described the weather outside as “coming and going, like a tornado.” When she tried to re-enter her office, Jasper wouldn’t budge from the front door.

“He was basically herding me away from the door. So I said to him, okay, what are we doing? We’re staying in the hall?” Barcy recalled.

Mere seconds later, she heard a loud noise coming from her office. A large roof tile had broken off and flew through her office window, landing on her desk. Shards of glass were scattered everywhere, including on Jasper’s dog bed below it.

“I just felt super grateful, like intuition doesn’t lie,” Barcy said.

Reflecting on those moments, she believes her best friend sensed the danger and acted to protect her.

“They have an awareness we don’t because we’re too busy. I just think we should listen to our animals. I think he believes it’s his job, and I’m glad it is his job,” Barcy said.

A dog Rebecca rescued at five months old is now shielding her from potential harm.

“He loves our family. Since we rescued him, he’s just paid it back and rescued me,” she said.
