Valley family wants Mesa Police to reopen teen violence investigation

Mesa Police says there is no probable cause in the case.

MESA, Ariz. — A 14-year-old boy from Mesa faced a challenging summer, his left arm immobilized in a cast after a severe injury.

An x-ray from May 25, 2024, revealed the extent of the damage: both bones in his left arm were split in half.

“Every week we were getting x-rays to make sure it was healing okay,” said Brittany Warrick, the teen’s mother. “He has three incisions where they inserted two wires to help his bones straighten out because his arm healed warped like crooked.”

Warrick disclosed that her son sustained a broken arm, a concussion, and several cuts following an alleged attack by another teenager at a Mesa park.

“I turned around, and I saw his whole face and he’s holding his arm and there’s blood all over his shirt and chest,” she recalled.

A Snapchat video after the incident depicted the injured teen on the ground, cradling his arm, while another boy could be heard laughing.

“The fact that they would post online immediately after and laugh about it, and get likes on social media is, it’s insane for me to think they would do that,” said Jeffrey Warrick, the teen’s step-father.

The family reported the incident to the police.

Mesa Police informed 12News, “due to no video footage of the actual fight and due to the differing stories made by each involved party, probable cause has not been established in this case.”

Concerned about the lack of accountability, the teen’s parents are urging the police to re-examine the case.

“They’re getting away with it. There’s no accountability,” Warrick stressed.

A spokesperson for Mesa Police revealed that a detective has been assigned to review the initial findings of the investigating officer.
