Havasu Unites: Community, Businesses Rally to Support Family Devastated by Fire

A family in Havasu is rebuilding their lives from scratch after a severe house fire last Tuesday. The Gordons, a family of four, have received substantial aid from the community and local businesses, helping them slowly regain their footing. The devastating blaze destroyed their home on Blue Canyon Road, reported at around 1:10 p.m.
Justin Gordon, the father, reminisced on the normal day turned tragic when his wife, Ashley, called about a potential emergency. He found the back patio engulfed in flames. In a panic, he ushered his children, Jaxson and Lincoln, out of the house. Attempting to extinguish the fire, Justin realized too late that the hose was too short, leading to his own escape through thick smoke without any personal belongings.
Justin criticized the response time of the fire crews, stating the nearest fire station was occupied with training. The city reported that a battalion chief, one truck company, and four engine companies managed to control the fire within 40 minutes. Assistance from the Desert Hills Fire Department was instrumental in suppressing the flames.
Local business owner Doug Hunter initiated support efforts for the Gordons. His online posts gathered significant community response, leading to donations, gift cards, and other resources. Hunter coordinated the aid to the family, highlighting the community’s solidarity.
“It’s unbelievable. I’ve never witnessed or experienced a community as tight-knit as it is out here,” Justin expressed, acknowledging the overwhelming support from both city and county residents. Immediate assistance came from organizations like The Clothes Closet, River Cities United Way, Catholic Charities, and the American Red Cross.
In the past week, the displaced family stayed at a hotel. However, thanks to the community, they transitioned to a temporary housing solution. Realtor Sandra Faubion of Realty ONE Group Mountain Desert offered a fully furnished condo free for the next 60 days.
“We’re just going to try to save up some cash and get into a house as fast as possible,” Justin stated, expressing deep gratitude to everyone who reached out. He also thanked the firefighters for their bravery in extreme conditions.
