Havasu Police Charge California Woman with Felony for Stealing Hat from Iconic ‘Big Orange Boat’
Lake Havasu City has reported an increase in theft incidents concerning the Big Orange Boat, a floating vendor serving food and items to locals and visitors on the lake. Recently, California resident Kristine L. Kimball faced felony charges for allegedly stealing from the vessel.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Big Orange Boat was docked near Rotary Park Beach when the owner received a motion alert from their surveillance system. The installation of these cameras was a precautionary measure due to previous trespassing incidents. Video footage later confirmed that Kimball, aged 37, boarded the unoccupied boat without permission.
During the recorded encounter, Kimball expressed her intention to “borrow” a hat from a mannequin on the boat. Shortly after, she left the scene wearing the $50 accessory. The surveillance footage also captured a personal watercraft departing the area immediately after the alleged theft.
Hours later, Kimball returned to the Big Orange Boat, prompting the owners to contact the authorities. Although she attempted to return the hat, the owner declined, noting its new condition had diminished its resale value. When questioned by police, Kimball reportedly confessed to taking the hat and was subsequently cited for felony theft.
However, court records indicate that the case will proceed as a misdemeanor in Lake Havasu Municipal Court, with charges formally filed against Kimball on Thursday. Law enforcement continues to monitor incidents affecting the Big Orange Boat as vigilance seems necessary amidst ongoing concerns over theft and trespassing.
