Havasu Man Wrecks $2,500 Mailbox in Rollover Crash and Spins Tall Tale to Cops
A man from Lake Havasu City faces multiple felony charges stemming from a bizarre incident last week involving a vehicle crash and mail theft. The event unfolded on the morning of October 6 when police received reports of an accident on Kiowa Boulevard at approximately 5:25 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a white van overturned with a mailbox and debris scattered about. The van’s driver was missing from the scene, prompting initial concern. Authorities later identified the driver as 36-year-old Brandon R. Servantes.
According to the police report, the custom mailbox was valued at around $2,500. Servantes contacted the police about 52 minutes after the accident, claiming that his vehicle had been stolen by two unidentified suspects.
Servantes recounted to officers that he was asleep in his van when he was awoken by a knock on his window. He alleged that two men assaulted him before fleeing with his vehicle. However, a search of the van revealed significant evidence to the contrary.
During their investigation, officers found various items, including cannabis, drug paraphernalia, and several pieces of mail not addressed to Servantes. Additionally, detectives noted that he exhibited no visible injuries typically associated with an accident.
Under questioning, Servantes ultimately confessed that the methamphetamine discovered belonged to him. He was taken to the Lake Havasu City Police Department for processing on charges of possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.
As the investigation continued into the purported theft of his vehicle, Servantes claimed to have walked home after the incident. However, the timing raised suspicion, as the distance from the crash scene to his residence would have correlated with the timeframe of his phone call to police.
Further interrogation led Servantes to admit his involvement in the crash. He stated there were no passengers in the vehicle and eventually conceded that he had not been robbed or had his vehicle stolen that morning.
In a shocking revelation, Servantes disclosed previous incidents of stealing mail from local residents, asserting he felt “rebellious” but never opened the stolen items. Consequently, he now faces additional charges, including felony counts of theft and criminal damage to property, as well as misdemeanor charges for hit-and-run and making false statements to law enforcement.
