Havasu detectives investigate shooting incident involving county deputies

Mohave County Sheriff’s deputies responded Saturday to a Golden Valley business, suspecting the presence of a stolen freight truck and an armed individual. As the situation unfolded just before noon, deputies encountered 40-year-old William Erwin from Lakewood, California.

Upon arrival, authorities ordered Erwin to surrender. Instead, he entered the stolen vehicle and fled the scene. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as he drove away. A deputy returned fire, striking the rear of the truck during Erwin’s escape.

The Lake Havasu City Police Department has since taken over the investigation. Erwin led deputies on a pursuit that concluded in Laughlin, Nevada, where he was apprehended by officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Erwin has been booked into Nevada’s Clark County Detention Facility, facing charges for possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful flight from law enforcement, and two felony warrants from Bullhead City. Fortunately, neither he nor the deputies were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

In accordance with standard protocol, the investigation into the shooting incident will be conducted by an external agency to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. As of Wednesday afternoon, the identities of the involved deputies have yet to be released to the public.
