Democratic National Convention
Harris and DNC Prepare for Mass Protests as Demonstrators Rally to Make Their Voices Heard

CHICAGO – This weekend, Chicago buzzed with activity as the 2024 Democratic National Convention commenced, characterized by welcoming blue banners and numerous enthusiastic supporters. However, contrasting scenes erupted across the city, where groups were seen bearing Palestinian flags and voicing strong opposition to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, branding them as “Genocide Joe” and “Killer Kamala.”
As protests intensified, demonstrators articulated a series of demands. Their calls for action included restoring national abortion rights and LGBTQ+ protections, while the predominant focus remained on ceasing arms shipments to Israel amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza, where the death toll has soared past 40,000 since the Hamas attacks on October 7.
Tighe Barry, a protester from Washington D.C., expressed the disillusionment among younger voters. “Young people are sick and tired of endless wars,” he stated. He emphasized a growing frustration over repeated promises from leaders without tangible results for the youth. “Voting for a Democrat without assurance that their policies will change means we lose our soul,” Barry articulated.
Andy Thayer, an organizer with Bodies Outside of Unjust Laws, criticized the Democratic Party’s commitment to reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights, suggesting that their history of voting for measures like the Hyde Amendment contradicts their proclaimed support. “They are more interested in their power than in our rights,” he asserted, capitalizing on demonstrators’ feelings of betrayal.
On Monday, protesters marched from Union Park to a nearby venue, chanting slogans accusing the Democratic Party of condoning genocide and war. Tensions escalated when demonstrators breached a section of the convention’s security perimeter, though law enforcement quickly contained the situation, assuring that no threats emerged against convention attendees.
As protests shifted in focus from college campuses over the summer back to major events like the convention, tensions within the Democratic Party regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict became evident. Political science professor David McLennan noted that Vice President Harris faces significant pressure to navigate this complex issue sensitively as she aims to address both pro-Palestinian sentiments and the traditional party stance supporting Israel.
In anticipation of the protests, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and local police pledged to uphold First Amendment rights while maintaining a strict stance against violence. A series of rallies is expected throughout the week, with predictions estimating attendance in the tens of thousands.
Emory University’s Andra Gillespie highlighted the strategic implications of the protests for Harris, warning that any violent outbursts could solidify Donald Trump’s claims about Democratic leadership and public safety. “Activists may have to reconcile their demands with the reality of political compromise,” she added.
The convention serves as a pivotal moment for Democrats, with many hoping to not only address pressing social issues but also to solidify their party’s unity amidst growing dissent.
