Great American Seed Up is Back with a Bloom!
The Great American Seed Up, a unique bulk seed buying bazaar, is set for its 10th year at North Phoenix Baptist Church on October 11 and 12. This event, known for its extensive selection of seeds, aims to deepen the community’s gardening knowledge and practices.
Organizers focus on promoting seed-saving strategies, which contribute to a more sustainable local seed economy. The impact is significant: stronger crops, improved pest resistance, and tastier produce for Arizonans. “Do you know that our grocery stores only have a three-day food supply?” questioned co-founder Greg Peterson. He emphasized the importance of local food systems and open-pollinated seed cultivation.
The event opens at 4 p.m. on Friday for pre-registered attendees and continues until 7:30 p.m. After 5:30 p.m., walk-ins are welcome. A highlight of the evening includes a talk by Don Guerra from Barrio Bread, who transitioned from a garage bakery to a James Beard Award-winning operation. His involvement in the local grain movement has been pivotal, and attendees will have the opportunity to sample his acclaimed sourdough bread.
Saturday’s schedule begins at 9 a.m. for pre-registrants, with walk-in options starting at 11 a.m. For just $7.50, participants gain access to the Seed Room and a wealth of educational resources. Early registration is available online at www.greatamericanseedup.org.
