Grand Canyon University (GCU) has announced that it will cover college costs for over 300 high-achieving, low-income students this academic year through its expanded Canyon Rising Scholarship program.

Previously known as the Students Inspiring Students Scholarship, the initiative will grant scholarships to 305 seniors, with 100 scholarships covering full on-campus housing and meal expenses. GCU President Brian Mueller emphasized the university’s commitment to community growth and equitable opportunities. “Historically, education is the great equalizer in society, providing equality of opportunity for all socioeconomic classes,” he stated.

Mueller noted that a significant portion of scholarship recipients are first-generation college students and students of color, reflecting the community’s demographics. “The overwhelming majority of scholarship recipients have been first-generation college students and students of color,” he added.

The Canyon Rising Scholarship program began in 2016 in partnership with Alhambra High School and now includes over 20 high schools in GCU’s inner-city area. Over its eight-year history, the program has awarded more than 1,000 scholarships.

Newly admitted scholars will be honored at a ceremony at GCU’s Global Credit Union Arena, attended by family members and program donors. In addition to financial support, GCU aims to enhance career counseling services to better prepare students for future job opportunities. Jennifer Mitchell, GCU K12 and Collegiate Advancement director, noted that connecting scholars with local work experiences can help foster community transformation.

Scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters and are not affected by GCU’s CAP policy. To qualify for the next round, students must meet specific criteria, including eligibility for the maximum Pell Grant, a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA, and graduation from an Arizona high school.

Prospective students should apply to GCU without an application fee, submit high school transcripts, meet with an admissions counselor, complete the FAFSA, and register for classes. Accepted individuals must also attend the Canyon Rising Scholarship Seminar, designed to prepare them for success at GCU.
