Gov. Hobbs Tackles Chase Field Funding Showdown

Key stakeholders will convene next week to facilitate discussions aimed at advancing legislation critical to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ future at Chase Field. The City of Phoenix and Maricopa County, both staunch opponents of the current bill, have confirmed their participation in these negotiations.
Gov. Katie Hobbs’ office is stepping in to mediate, emphasizing a commitment to protecting taxpayer interests while creating jobs. “The goal is to negotiate a bill that balances these priorities and keeps the Diamondbacks in Phoenix,” stated Christian Slater, the governor’s communications director.
The contentious bill, which received backing from a state Senate committee on March 24, drew unexpected opposition from Maricopa County. Chairman Jack Galvin expressed strong concerns over the proposed financial implications, stating, “The legislation would divert funds from our general fund, which is unacceptable.” This sentiment echoes Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, who described the legislation as a “major league boondoggle.”
The proposed bill seeks to “recapture” sales tax revenue generated at Chase Field to fund renovations. However, an amendment passed last month raised alarms, as it would impact the county’s general fund, funding essential services like law enforcement.
Galvin has been vocal about the need for a meeting that includes all involved parties, criticizing previous stakeholder discussions as insufficient. Following his comments, he received an invitation to next week’s meeting with Hobbs’ chief of staff.
In a related statement, Mayor Gallego warned that the renovations could cost taxpayers up to $1 billion, far exceeding the Diamondbacks’ own estimates. “There’s no requirement for the Diamondbacks to contribute financially, making this a significant concern,” she reiterated.
Legislation sponsor, Republican State Rep. Jeff Weninger, indicated that discussions surrounding the bill have continued and are being carefully monitored amid a busy legislative session.
