Gonzales Surpasses 1,000 Career Points as Pima Men Extend Winning Streak to 29 Against Mesa

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team continues its stellar run this season, recording a 98-76 victory against Mesa Community College on Saturday. With this win, the Aztecs improved to an impressive 29-0 overall and 17-0 in the ACCAC.
Ranked No. 2 nationally, the Aztecs maintained dominance throughout the game, leading 48-34 at halftime and outscoring the Thunderbirds 50-42 in the second half. This victory caps a regular season where they defeated Mesa in all three matchups by an average of 28.6 points.
Sophomore Cohenj Gonzales achieved a significant milestone during the game, scoring 13 points to reach 1,005 for his Pima career. He is the fifth player to reach the 1,000-point mark under coach Brian Peabody, joining previous notable scorers like Abram Carrasco and Murphy Gershman. Gonzales also contributed eight assists and five rebounds to the team effort.
Leading the team’s scoring was sophomore Max Majerle, who netted 21 points, shooting 80% from the field and hitting 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. His performance was complemented by impressive contributions from Wes Ball, who added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Gabe Oldham, who brought in 15 points and eight rebounds as well.
Freshman Mason Hunt rounded out the scoring from the bench with 10 points, showcasing the team’s depth. Pima’s shooting was sharp, as they went 19 for 22 from the free-throw line and hit 42.9% of their three-point attempts.
As the Aztecs prepare for the regular season finale next Saturday, they will host Scottsdale Community College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m.
