A man from Glennwilde has surrendered to the Maricopa Police Department following an incident in which he allegedly strangled his sister. The police reported the event unfolded late Monday evening.

Officers responded around 8 p.m. to a call from a residence on Barcelona Drive, where a woman claimed her brother was actively strangling her. Upon arrival, they discovered the 26-year-old suspect, Joseph Gutierrez, had already fled the scene. The victim was found on a nearby street corner, visibly injured with both fresh and dried blood on her face.

The sister recounted to authorities that the assault occurred in her bathroom, where Gutierrez choked her with both hands. She explained that she nearly lost consciousness and credits her boyfriend’s intervention for her survival.

The boyfriend, who was in the home during the assault, corroborated her account. He witnessed Gutierrez attacking his girlfriend and managed to pull him away. After the altercation, Gutierrez fled, leaving both the victim and her boyfriend confused about his whereabouts.

Police documentation indicated the victim had distinct abrasions on her throat, consistent with strangulation. Early the following day, Gutierrez turned himself in at the Maricopa Police Station, claiming he could not recall the incident due to intoxication.

Gutierrez has been arrested and booked into the Pinal County jail, facing charges of aggravated assault, assault, and disorderly conduct. If convicted on all counts, he could face a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison.
