Man killed by Glendale officers in September held 2 people hostage, had protective order against him

GLENDALE, Ariz. — A complex incident resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man, Karl Komorowski, following a standoff with Glendale police on September 4. Authorities reported that prior to the shooting, Komorowski held two individuals hostage at a residence near 59th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

The event began when neighbors alerted the police, concerned for the well-being of the residents at the home. This concern stemmed from the fact that Komorowski’s wife had an order of protection against him. When his victim’s mother visited the property, her daughter discreetly signaled for help, prompting a 911 call where the mother expressed fear for their lives.

During the standoff, both hostages managed to escape after Komorowski became distracted. Police confirmed that he had several firearms in the home, intensifying the situation. Throughout the hours of negotiation, Komorowski made threats toward officers and himself, while also firing shots in their direction.

Komorowski was shot by police after exiting the residence and allegedly raising a weapon. Police identified the firearm in question, a crucial element in their ongoing investigation.

The Glendale Police Department stated that both an internal and a criminal investigation are underway. These reviews aim to determine if the use of force was justified under the department’s policies. Completion of these reviews could take several months, after which findings will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Following the attorney’s review, results will be shared with a ‘Response to Resistance Board’, consisting of experts and community members to evaluate the incident comprehensively.

This story remains developing, with further information expected as the investigation unfolds.
