Glendale Group Fights Back Against Out-of-State Activists Targeting VAI Resort

By Matthew Holloway |
The campaign “Yes for Glendale” is actively promoting Propositions 401 and 402, countering claims from Worker Power, the political arm of the California labor union UniteHere. The Glendale initiative aims to combat what it terms “false rhetoric” regarding the developments in the area.
Grant Fisher, Chairman of the campaign and President & CEO of VAI Resort, asserts, “The facts are on our side. Out-of-state activists may attempt to mislead Glendale voters, but we are focused on clarifying the truth.” He emphasizes that by supporting the propositions, voters would be endorsing a substantial resort project projected to create over 2,000 jobs and generate $2 billion in tax revenues for community services.
In defense of their position, the campaign published fact checks addressing various assertions made by Worker Power. One key claim they rebut is the idea that voting against the propositions could preserve land for park space. Campaign representatives clarify that the contested land is designated for development, not parks. Historical records indicate that previous development plans for the site included mixed-use developments rather than parks or green spaces.
Another claim from Labor Power asserted that the VAI Resort would consume excessive water. The campaign refutes this, presenting data showing that the resort will use 50% less water than previously projected and 80% less than the farmland that occupied the site before. This change reflects the commitment of the developers to sustainability.
Additionally, the campaign addresses concerns regarding tax incentives that some opponents described as overly generous. They note that any tax incentives discussed were part of agreements with previous developers, not the current ones. Presently, VAI Resort does not seek such incentives, a fact confirmed by reliable sources.
Fisher concluded, “VAI Resort represents an opportunity for Glendale—a world-class destination that supports local job creation and contributes significantly to city revenue. We urge voters to support Propositions 401 and 402 and send a clear message to outside influences.”
The campaign, which officially launched in early April, has garnered endorsements from key local figures, including Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers and Maricopa County Supervisor Debbie Lesko.
