Gilleland Shines with 19 Kills as Pima Volleyball Triumphs Over Central Arizona in 4 Sets
The Pima Community College volleyball team improved its record to 13-12 after a competitive match against Central Arizona College, held at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday. The Aztecs, representing ACCAC Division II, clinched a victory in four sets with scores of 25-16, 15-25, 25-23, and 25-23, ending the Vaqueras’ (13-13) bid for a win.
Pima jumped ahead early, starting the first set with a strong offensive push. Sophomore Jasmin Joseph, whose impressive serve included two aces, along with contributions from Taylor Crawford and Maggie McReynolds, allowed the Aztecs to establish an early lead. They maintained this advantage, securing the first set without losing momentum.
However, the second set saw a shift in momentum when the Vaqueras capitalized on their opportunities. After trailing initially, they rallied with a six-point run, overtaking the Aztecs and forcing the match to a tie after winning the set. Both teams demonstrated resilience and skill, culminating in an intense back-and-forth battle.
The third set was marked by drama, featuring 11 ties. The Vaqueras jumped to a 9-5 lead, but a stunning response from the Aztecs, driven by Elli Meinke and Ava Harrelson’s offensive plays, turned the tide. Despite fierce competition, Pima pulled ahead and secured a crucial win in this set.
The fourth set remained tense, with neither team able to maintain a clear advantage. The Vaqueras managed to gain a slight lead, but the Aztecs rallied, showcasing their tenacity. A critical kill from Meinke and a pivotal block by Harrelson helped Pima reclaim the lead before sealing the match two points later.
Gilleland led the Aztecs with 19 kills, supported by McReynolds with 13 kills. Kenna Simon and Meinke also made significant contributions, demonstrating the depth of Pima’s squad.
Looking ahead, the Aztecs will hit the road one final time this regular season, facing South Mountain Community College in an ACCAC Division II conference match. The game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
