Gilbert Firefighters Honor Independence Day by Helping Local Man Replace His American Flag

GILBERT, Ariz. — As Independence Day approaches, many residents are busy preparing for celebrations, including the display of the American flag. Russ Perry, a dedicated Gilbert resident, found himself in need of assistance to replace his well-worn flag in time for the festivities.
After 40 years of proudly showcasing the flag in front of his home, Perry realized his flag had become too tattered to display. With the Fourth of July approaching, he made a trip to Phoenix to pick up a new flag. However, as he attempted to take down the old one, the rope broke, complicating matters.
Faced with a 25-foot flagpole and an unreliable ladder, Perry decided to seek help from his local fire department. “It doesn’t hurt to ask,” he reasoned. “All they can do is say no.” To his relief, the firefighters at Gilbert Fire Station One agreed to assist.
Within an hour, a crew of four firefighters arrived with a firetruck. They not only replaced the flag and rope but also took the time to spray-paint the eagle atop the pole. “It’s as good as new,” Perry exclaimed, grateful for their support. “I would have either not been able to do it at all or broken my neck trying to do it.”
Perry expressed deep appreciation for the firefighters’ help, marking this Fourth of July as particularly memorable. “It’ll always be a memorable Fourth of July for this little extra event here,” he reflected.
While 12News attempted to interview the assisting crew, the battalion chief indicated that they were currently off-duty. However, the story of community spirit and cooperation stands strong as residents celebrate the nation’s 249th birthday.
