Gilbert Breaks Ground on New Victim Support Center, Set to Open by 2026

Construction is underway for the Gilbert Advocacy Center, a facility dedicated to supporting crime victims in Gilbert, Arizona. This center aims to assist these individuals as they navigate the legal system and heal from their experiences.
Designed to address a range of serious crimes including domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking, the center will provide essential victim services that are not currently available locally. Many victims have been relying on advocacy centers in surrounding areas.
Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg emphasized the importance of having a centralized location. “Everything we’re trying to do is minimize trauma and reduce recidivism,” he stated. The new facility is intended to create an environment that encourages victims to come forward and share their stories.
Construction began in January and aims to streamline legal assistance and recovery services. Features of the center will include forensic interview rooms, private counseling areas, and spaces for group therapy. The facility’s trauma-informed design is focused on providing a comfortable setting for healing.
While the center will not function as a shelter, it will connect victims seeking housing support with local nonprofits. Kathy Tilque, president of the Gilbert Advocacy Center Foundation, expressed their commitment to addressing the complex needs of victims. “We want to ensure victims feel heard and supported,” she said.
Soelberg noted that the center will also aid in preventing teen violence in Gilbert. Victims will receive guidance on legal processes, including obtaining harassment injunctions. “We want to make sure victims are comfortable going forward,” he added.
The funding for the center comprises approximately $23 million from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act and $20 million from Gilbert’s general funds. Construction completion is targeted for the Fall of 2026, with future volunteer opportunities anticipated for those wishing to contribute to the advocacy center’s mission.
