NEW YORK — A monumental celebration of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) is set for Sunday as the show marks its 50th season with a live special. Titled “SNL50: The Anniversary Celebration,” the event will air at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
This landmark anniversary honors a legacy that has launched the careers of numerous comedians over the decades, including Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, and Kristen Wiig. Generations of comedic talent are expected to honor the show that first premiered on October 11, 1975.
The special promises to be filled with surprises. While NBC has revealed some guest appearances, including big names like Murphy and Fey, many additional moments remain under wraps. Fans can also catch a red carpet pre-show hosted by SNL alumna Leslie Jones and NBC’s Willie Geist at 7 p.m. Eastern.
SNL has evolved into a cultural touchstone, known for its sharp satire on politics and pop culture and as a stage for major musical acts. Despite changing viewing habits driven by streaming, SNL sketches and performances continue to gain significant traction on platforms like YouTube.
Many notable former cast members have been confirmed for the anniversary special. The lineup includes Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Chris Rock, and more. Additionally, some of the original cast, known as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, will also make an appearance.
In addition to alumni, a host of familiar faces will return as well, including Steve Martin and prolific hosts such as Tom Hanks and Scarlett Johansson. The show will connect its comedic and musical legacy by featuring performances from stars like Paul McCartney and Miley Cyrus.
For those eager to see how SNL honors its musical contributions, the recent “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” at Radio City Music Hall showcased artists such as Cher and Nirvana, reflecting the show’s lasting influence on music. A new documentary by Questlove, titled “Ladies and Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music,” is also available for streaming on Peacock.
