Gas leak scare evacuates 5 businesses on the main strip

A gas leak scare at a commercial building in Maricopa prompted the evacuation of five businesses early this morning. The incident occurred around 10:06 a.m. at 21101 N. John Wayne Parkway in the Maricopa Market plaza.

Crews from the Maricopa Fire and Medical Department, including Ladder Tender 571, Engine 574, and Engine 575, were dispatched to the scene. Public safety spokesperson Monica Williams reported that the call was linked to a potential gas leak in a unit currently undergoing renovations at Fry’s Marketplace.

The evacuation affected T-Mobile, Say Sushi, Sally Beauty Supply, Yogurt Jungle, and Pizza Hut. However, Williams clarified that the reported leak proved to be a false alarm. “Fire crews evacuated the whole complex as a precaution,” she noted.

Representatives from Southwest Gas arrived shortly after and confirmed there was no actual gas leak present. By 11 a.m., all businesses were cleared to resume normal operations, and the scene was deemed safe.

The response showcased the effectiveness of local emergency services, ensuring the safety of both shoppers and employees in the vicinity. The area returned to its usual bustle before noon.
