Forum set for applicants vying for vacant Pima Board of Supervisors seat

A series of political events are set to unfold in Tucson, anchored by a virtual forum hosted by the League of Women Voters. This forum, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, will spotlight candidates vying for the vacant District 5 seat on the Pima County Board of Supervisors. The vacancy arose after Supervisor Adelita Grijalva resigned to pursue a congressional seat following the death of her father, Raúl Grijalva, a long-serving congressman from Southern Arizona.

Interested candidates must submit their applications by Monday, April 7. The Board of Supervisors is expected to make an appointment decision during their April 15 meeting.

In addition to the forum, several significant events will take place this week. On Friday, April 4, Tucson Sentinel Co-Publisher and Editor Dylan Smith will discuss major news stories alongside fellow journalists on AZPM’s Press Room, airing at 8:30 p.m. on PBS 6 and NPR affiliate KUAZ-FM. Also on that day, reporter Jim Nintzel will interview Ted Maxwell, President and CEO of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, on the Buckmaster show at noon.

Key deadlines are approaching for the Tucson City Council campaigns and the special congressional election due to the late congressman’s passing. Candidates for the City Council must submit their nominating petitions by April 7, while petitions for the CD7 special election are due by April 14.

Future political gatherings include a happy hour hosted by the Democrats of Greater Tucson on April 16 and a campaign launch party for Democrat Leighton Rockafellow Jr. on April 18, aimed at securing the Ward 6 seat on the Tucson City Council.

Looking ahead, critical dates for voter registration and early voting have been set for both the CD7 special and Tucson City Council elections, culminating in primary election days in July and August, respectively.
