Former Stanfield Woman Returns to MVD Services: “It Feels Like Coming Home”

Maricopa residents can soon expect a return to local driver’s license and registration services as the Motor Vehicle Processing office prepares to open this fall. Jan Kortsen, owner of the Willcox-based company, confirmed the new location will take over the former Arizona State Express Title & Registration office.
The previous office closed a month ago after serving the community for 12 years, leaving a noticeable service gap. “This feels like a homecoming for me,” Kortsen shared. Her ties to the area date back to her decade-long residency in nearby Stanfield, from which she has fond memories of the old Maricopa.
Kortsen established Motor Vehicle Processing in 2010, and Maricopa will mark the company’s sixth location. “After the closure, we saw an opportunity to step in,” she explained. The third-party services aim to meet the local demand for vehicle registrations and licenses.
An unexpected sign posted on June 2 announced the indefinite closure of the former office, directing customers to other state-operated locations in Casa Grande, Chandler, or Tempe. Previous owner, Lewis Green, remains tight-lipped about the circumstances leading to the shutdown, simply stating, “The business was sold.”
Kortsen indicated that while preparations are underway, residents might have to wait up to two months for the new office to officially serve the public. “We must adhere to state requirements, which usually takes about 60 days,” she noted. If all goes well, the MVD-authorized office could open by early September, with fresh signage to be displayed next month.
“We aim to create a more personable and inviting environment,” Kortsen stated, emphasizing her commitment to exceptional customer service. Plans include ample staffing to ensure efficiency and friendliness for all customers seeking assistance.
