Following in My Father’s Footsteps: A Journey of Legacy
Michael Way’s political journey began in his childhood, shaped by family values centered on public service. Growing up in a family committed to civic duty, he witnessed firsthand the legislative process, observing his father make decisions that impacted community freedoms and governance. The influence of these experiences instilled in him a deep appreciation for citizenship and activism.
Though his interest in politics was innate, it wasn’t until he reached the age of 34 that Way felt compelled to take the plunge himself. By that point, he was settled with a family of four children and a background in educational reform. While he initially believed his contributions were sufficient through advocacy work in charter schools, the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic catalyzed his political engagement. This period of crisis stirred a desire to protect his family and community from government overreach.
Determined not to hesitate, Way launched a campaign for the Arizona House, inspired by his father’s motto: “Don’t wait your turn. Just step forward and serve.” During his candidacy, he discovered the vital role of precinct committeemen (PCs) in local politics, essential for nurturing party growth and fostering community engagement. Building relationships with these individuals cemented his commitment to earning their trust, despite facing skepticism from some within the party about his residency qualifications.
After securing victory in the primary elections, Way felt a renewed sense of solidarity among party members in their collective mission to counteract what he termed “radical Left” ideologies. However, opposition persisted, driven by heavy financial backing aimed at derailing his campaign. Undeterred, Way focused on what mattered—his connection to voters. When election results were announced on November 6, he celebrated not only personal success but also the support of his community, marking a pivotal moment in his political career.
As he assumes his role in office, Way recognizes the weight of responsibility, especially as his children observe his actions and decisions. The constituents’ voices resonate in his approach: the priority to secure borders, bolster law enforcement, and combat progressive ideals in education, all while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
Way has quickly begun to act on his commitments, sponsoring important legislation aimed at protecting minors online, safeguarding parental rights, and addressing election integrity issues. His legislative efforts also extend to enhancing measures against human trafficking and substance abuse. Reflecting on his journey, he contemplates the legacy he will leave for his children, readying the next generation for their own paths in public service.
