Flake Family Scandal Erupts Again: A Social Media Showdown with Joe Arpaio
By Matthew Holloway |
Former Arizona Senator and Ambassador Jeff Flake has publicly supported Democrat Presidential nominee Kamala Harris, emphasizing the importance of the “rule of law.” Flake’s endorsement has sparked controversy, particularly from former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who responded sharply by reminding Flake of a scandal from 2014 that jeopardized his political career.
In a post on X, Flake stated, “I’m voting for Kamala Harris not in spite of being a conservative, but because I’m a conservative. Conservatives believe in the rule of law.” This declaration has drawn criticism, with Arpaio tweeting back, “Your son Austin and his wife killed 23 dogs, and then sued me and the Sheriff’s Office for prosecuting them. You tried to destroy me and my detectives; you don’t believe in the rule of law!”
Arpaio’s comments reference an indictment against Austin Flake and his wife, Logan, following the deaths of 23 dogs at a facility owned by Flake’s in-laws. At the time, Arpaio was the Sheriff leading the investigation, and he highlighted that the caretakers were Flake’s relatives. The legal fallout was significant, with charges against the Flakes eventually dismissed, but the Hughes pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.
The Flake family pursued a lawsuit against Arpaio and several others, claiming malicious prosecution. This litigation persisted for three years and concluded favorably for Arpaio in 2018 when a judge dismissed further attempts to revive the case.
During this tumultuous period, Flake, then a Senator, opted not to seek re-election amid plummeting popularity and internal GOP conflict. His stance against President Trump alienated him from the Arizona Republican establishment, with reports indicating bleak prospects for his political future.
In the aftermath of his political career, Flake has aligned himself with anti-Trump conservatives and has taken on roles supporting the Biden administration, including serving as U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye until September. His endorsement of Harris has raised questions among voters about his political motives and potential future roles, although he did not respond to inquiries about any policy concessions or promises he might have received in return for his support.
