Flags get final sendoff in VFW, Marine Corps League ceremony

This past weekend, Lake Havasu City military veterans gathered for a poignant ceremony honoring the nation’s colors. The event underscored the significance of proper flag disposal as old flags are prepared for respectful retirement.

More than 2,000 U.S. and Arizona flags were collected at Veterans Thrift, where community members joined veterans to ensure a dignified sendoff. The importance of upholding the U.S. Flag Code, which dictates the appropriate disposal methods, was central to the gathering.

VFW Commander Omer Ethier highlighted challenges faced in the disposal process. “The fire department says that nylon flags and polyester flags are illegal to burn because of the chemicals they release into the air,” he stated. Ethier explained that while cotton flags can be incinerated, the prevalence of synthetic flags complicates traditional disposal methods.

As a result, the flags collected were carefully boxed for transportation. They will be taken to a location where they can receive a fitting burial, preserving the honor they represented.
