Flags Lowered in Remembrance: Honoring Pearl Harbor on Saturday
On December 7, flags across the United States will be displayed at half-staff to honor the 83rd anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. This solemn day, known as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, holds significant historical importance.
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has mandated that flags at all state buildings be lowered from sunrise to sunset on this day. Furthermore, she has officially designated December 7 as Arizona Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
In 1994, Congress passed a resolution declaring December 7 as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day,” emphasizing the practice of lowering flags during this time. This act serves as a national tribute to those who lost their lives in the attack.
Since 1991, Arizona’s Motor Vehicle Division has issued Pearl Harbor Survivor license plates, honoring those who were in the U.S. Armed Forces and present during the attack on December 7, 1941. These special plates are also available for immediate family members of eligible survivors. Currently, 19 Pearl Harbor plates are active in Arizona, according to state transportation officials.
Communities, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to participate in honoring this day and remembering the sacrifices made during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
