Valerie Burgess, a resident of Maricopa, has developed a newfound appreciation for the local firefighters of the Maricopa Fire and Medical Department. Her perspective changed significantly after a series of unexpected encounters during a recent personal crisis.

Burgess, a single mother, faced health challenges one morning, waking up feeling unwell. With her young son in the other room, she recalls, “They came and transported me to the hospital and took care of my 1-year-old until he was picked up.” This support during a vulnerable moment left a lasting impression on her.

A week later, Burgess encountered the same firefighters at a local restaurant, where they surprised her with a visit to her home. “They told me they had a surprise that they would come over to my house and drop it off,” she said. To her amazement, they arrived with a new television, replacing her old one, along with vital resources for any future emergencies.

Having previously escaped a domestic violence situation from a shelter in Apache Junction, Burgess wanted to send a message to others facing similar struggles. “I just want to say if there is anyone out there going through DV, I know how hard it is, and even if you think you can’t leave, you can, and we all survive,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of community support in overcoming adversity.

Despite repeated attempts, responses from the firefighters involved and Fire Chief Brad Pitassi regarding this heartwarming story remained elusive.
