Firefighters urging heat safety as temperatures get hot in the Valley

Dizziness, nausea, cramps, and confusion can signal heat illness.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — On Saturday morning, the Scottsdale Fire Department responded to a hiker suffering from overheating on Pima Canyon Trail. Capt. Dave Folio reported that emergency crews safely assisted the hiker back from the trail and provided essential care after the incident.

With rising temperatures in the Valley, Folio warned residents to stay cautious. The forecast predicts highs in the triple digits this weekend, with Saturday reaching 103 degrees and Sunday soaring to 105 degrees.

The risk of heat-related illnesses increases with temperature. Folio emphasized the importance of understanding preventive measures:

  • Start Early: Hit the trail at sunrise to avoid peak heat.
  • Hydrate Often: Consume water and electrolytes before, during, and after your hike.
  • Dress Smart: Wear light-colored, breathable attire and a wide-brim hat.
  • Know the Signs: Watch for symptoms like dizziness and nausea.
  • Turn Back Early: If you feel uncertain, it’s wise to shorten your hike.

Residents are urged to take these precautions seriously as the heat wave continues. Being prepared can prevent heat illness and ensure outdoor activities remain enjoyable.
