Film festival considers a move to the Sedona Cultural Park

The future of the Sedona International Film Festival (SIFF) may lie in its return to the former Sedona Cultural Park, a proposition that emerged recently as Executive Director Patrick Schweiss sought new locations for the festival’s theaters.

Schweiss indicated that the festival always planned to acquire the West Sedona building housing the Mary D. Fisher and Alice Gill-Sheldon Theaters, for which SIFF holds first right of refusal. However, the current asking price exceeds the property’s appraised value by double.

“Our committee began questioning why we were considering retrofitting an older building instead of constructing theaters on land we already own,” Schweiss stated. His initial opposition faded as he realized that a new site would be more financially feasible.

“At that price, we could find land and build our ideal facilities,” he remarked, explaining how he scoured State Route 89A for suitable properties. “We cherish our location in West Sedona, especially our visibility on the highway,” he added, recognizing the potential benefits of utilizing the Sedona Performing Arts Center.

A key conversation with Northern Arizona Healthcare about vacant land near the Sedona Emergency Room prompted a dialogue with city officials concerning land exchange possibilities.

Mayor Scott Jablow suggested positioning SIFF as an anchor tenant at the Cultural Park. Subsequent discussions with city leaders focused on developing blocks designated for mixed-use near SR 89A. SIFF plans to transform these areas into commercial space while acting as the developer.

City Manager Anette Spickard expressed enthusiasm for SIFF’s vision, indicating a shared commitment to fostering a vibrant community space.

Schweiss later presented to the Sedona Planning and Zoning Commission, advocating for SIFF’s proposed use of the mixed-use area. He noted the city’s strong interest in expediting the development process, as SIFF’s project could facilitate further improvements to the overall property.

The festival seeks approximately 3.4 acres for its ambitious campus, tentatively named the Sedona Cinema Arts Center. Unlike typical commercial spaces, SIFF aims to create a unique venue dedicated solely to film and live performances.

“We want to replicate our theaters and introduce a smaller performance venue,” Schweiss explained, emphasizing the need for a space that accommodates audiences typical of local events. Recreating this intimate setting is crucial for enhancing the audience experience.

While attendance at local events has dwindled from its peak, Schweiss remains hopeful that consistent, high-quality productions can rekindle interest in the arts.

SIFF seeks a long-term lease arrangement with the city for the development, envisioning a venue modeled after the renowned Musical Instrument Museum theater, known for its superior acoustics.

Collaboration with Grammy-winning songwriter Gardner Cole may enhance the sound design and incorporate filmmaking facilities, creating an innovative environment. Schweiss also noted the possibility of partnering with other regional arts venues.

With aspirations for additional theaters on-site, he anticipates a carefully planned campus that could keep all activities contained within a two-block radius.

Optimistic about the timeline, Schweiss estimated groundbreaking could occur in two years, aligning with setup and fundraising processes. SIFF’s architect is already familiar with the property, ensuring the project leverages existing infrastructure.

Schweiss concluded, “This initiative represents our commitment to creating a state-of-the-art facility that serves diverse community needs.” He described the project as a homecoming for SIFF while envisioning an inspiring cultural gateway for visitors.
