Filipino Gymnast Celebrated with Hero’s Welcome and Lifetime Free Buffets After Paris Olympic Gold Sweep

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo returned home to Manila on Tuesday, celebrated as a national hero after clinching two gold medals at the Paris Olympics. His victories in the men’s floor exercise and vault mark a historic achievement for the Philippines, the nation’s first Olympic golds in a century of participation.
The 24-year-old was greeted with a grand welcome, which included a televised tribute featuring President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. In recognition of Yulo’s accomplishments, donations exceeding $1 million were pledged, encompassing cash gifts, a luxury condo, and even free buffet lunches for life.
Yulo’s success has generated significant excitement across the Philippines, providing a much-needed morale boost amidst persistent societal challenges. Upon arrival, he was warmly embraced by fans eager to capture the moment with handshakes and selfies. “I am beyond blessed and grateful,” he remarked as he wore his medals proudly.
During the ceremony, President Marcos awarded athletes with presidential citations, delivering one million pesos ($17,500) to each. Notably, Yulo received 20 million pesos ($350,000) as recognition of his unique hardships in pursuing athletic excellence, often without formal support from the government.
“They did it on their own,” Marcos noted, emphasizing the lack of a structured support system. He vowed to address these issues moving forward. Additionally, corporate contributions included an impressive array of gifts ranging from free meals to international flight offers, further elevating Yulo’s celebratory experience.
Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, known for his extraordinary accomplishments, also promised Yulo a cash reward, adding to the athlete’s array of accolades and support. A celebratory parade is planned for Wednesday, anticipated to attract thousands as it weaves through significant areas of Manila, including neighborhoods reflective of Yulo’s upbringing.
Rodrigo Frisco, a 74-year-old relative, expressed overwhelming pride in Yulo’s achievements. “Who would believe that these narrow alleys and small houses would produce a champion?” he shared, emphasizing the impact of Yulo’s story of success against the odds.
The streets of Yulo’s community have been adorned with posters celebrating his Olympic victories, embodying the spirit of hope for many Filipinos. Yulo follows in the footsteps of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who secured the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 2021, solidifying the country’s growing sports legacy.
