Fiesta Bowl Unveils 2024 Parade’s Grand Marshal
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Anthony Robles, a remarkable figure in Arizona’s sports history, has been named the grand marshal for the 2024 Vrbo Fiesta Bowl Parade, set for December 28. Robles, a 2011 NCAA wrestling champion and a proud Arizonan, graduated from Mesa High School and Arizona State University (ASU). He is celebrated not only for his athletic achievements but also for his inspirational journey.
“Being the Grand Marshal in my own state is an honor. Arizona is home for me. Representing all the good things here is very special,” Robles expressed in a news release. His achievements in wrestling, which include three-time All-American status, have made him a revered local figure.
Born without his right leg, Robles turned challenges into triumphs as he walked on to the ASU wrestling team. His dedication led to a storied career and recognition in multiple Halls of Fame, showcasing the strength of the human spirit.
Erik Moses, Fiesta Sports Foundation Executive Director & CEO, remarked, “Anthony Robles embodies perseverance, humility, and courage. His life story is an inspiration for everyone.” The parade’s evolution aims to enhance engagement among college football fans and the broader community.
Robles’ life story is being brought to the big screen in an upcoming film titled “Unstoppable,” produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The movie features Jennifer Lopez portraying Robles’ mother, with Jharrel Jerome and Don Cheadle also in pivotal roles.
He joins a prestigious list of previous grand marshals, including sports legends like Charles Barkley and Diana Taurasi. Judy Bernas, Board Chair of the Fiesta Sports Foundation, expressed excitement about Robles’ participation: “Witnessing one of Arizona’s greatest success stories will elevate the celebration of our local community during the parade.”
Phoenix, home to the Fiesta Bowl, boasts four major professional sports teams, including the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and NBA’s Phoenix Suns. The city is a hub for major sporting events, including college bowl games and the WM Phoenix Open, showcasing its vibrant sports culture.
