FC Tucson Women Gear Up for Season’s Grand Finale Weekend

FC Tucson stands on the cusp of a significant achievement as they face Arizona Arsenal on Saturday night. A successful result could secure their place in the postseason.
With only two games remaining in their season, FC Tucson holds 3rd place in the Desert Conference table, tied on points with Royals AZ. The Royals’ season is finished, placing Tucson’s postseason fate firmly in their own hands.
Luz Duarte, a key figure for the team, has provided invaluable leadership. Duarte, who has three professional seasons in Mexico and national team appearances, offers unmatched experience this season. “I bring my expertise, a lot of things I learned as a professional… different coaching styles, different players, different personalities,” Duarte noted. “This year, I came in as a role model, a guide… and try to lead by example.”
Coach Roberto Garcia emphasized Duarte’s impact. “She brings so much on and off the field: maturity, experience,” he said. “She’s great in the locker room and has so much to offer the team, the club, and our youth players.”
Duarte’s return in 2019, after the COVID-19 interruption, came with a transition. The team has shifted to a younger roster. Duarte has embraced this change, stating, “Every year is different. With a new year and a new tournament come new opportunities.” The generational shift, though challenging, has been managed well by the team.
FC Tucson’s final games pit them against Arizona Arsenal in Scottsdale on Saturday, and El Paso at Kino North Stadium on Sunday at 7 p.m. Winning against Arsenal would secure second place and a postseason berth. The squad is optimistic about their prospects.
“I think the team knows what they’re capable of,” said forward Leigha Dobbins. “We’ve learned a lot and know what we need to do to get the points this weekend. We’re going in positive-minded and ready to work hard.”
